Brown) is a heritage American brand known for its classic 19th- and early 20th-century-inspired footwear, manufactured in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. The \"Sanitized\" tag found in these shoes typically indicates that the insole was treated with an antimicrobial formula for odor and hygiene control. 1935 Foundation: The company was founded in Burgdorf, Switzerland, by the Lüthi family, who still own and operate the business today. American Innovation: The brand originated from an American-Swiss collaboration. The Lüthi family discovered an innovative chemical treatment in the United States that could prevent foul odors in everyday items, specifically shoe insoles. Shoe Treatment Development: By the 1950s, Sanitized had successfully introduced an additive to treat the heavy, moisture-prone textile linings of shoes. This was groundbreaking at the time, as it combated athlete\'s foot and bad smells in well-worn leather and canvas footwear. If you are looking at vintage boots, dress shoes, or sneakers from the 1960s to the 1990s, you may see the Sanitized logo or a \"Sanitized Treated\" stamp on the insole. It was a major selling point used to market breathability and hygiene in pre-owned footwear.
